If money - or the lack of it - is stopping you from getting the best start in life, then this section is for you.

With a few exceptions, all workers in the UK aged 16 or over are legally entitled to be paid a minimum amount per hour. This is regardless of the kind of work they do or the size and type of the company. The rate is reviewed every year.

National Minimum Wage rates from 1 October 2011

AgeEntitlement
16-17£3.68 per hour
18-20£4.98 per hour

21 and over

£6.08 per hour
Apprentices under 19 or over 19 and in first year of apprenticeship£2.60 per hour
