Types of Prison
The type of prison a person goes to is dependent on level of risk, defined as:
Category A: Offenders who would be very dangerous to the public or the state, visitors need to be vetted by the Police.
Category B: Offenders who do not present the highest level of danger, but for whom escape must be made difficult. All prisoners who are waiting for a sentence (remand) are classified as category B.
Category C: Offenders who are not considered dangerous, but cannot be trusted to serve their sentence in an 'open' prison.
Category D: Offenders who can be trusted to serve their sentence in an open prison.
