Dear Colleague,
Please find attached several attachments for you to use in support of your pandemic flu planning. There are two types of attachment, information and template letters. The information leaflets provide useful Health Protection Agency advice and guidance on some of the issues facing schools. The letter templates are intended for adaptation by schools into your own letter headings so that you have letters ready to go for parents and carers in respect of announcing school closures, the investigation of potential cases and/or announcing that the school will be staying open. There is also a template for a press release.
Some head teacher colleagues have reported that in cases of suspected pandemic flu, it would be useful to guide parents and carers to communicate this directly to the head teacher in the first instance. We are eager to ensure that pupils and parents are not unnecessarily worried by the uncontrolled spread of rumours, and the additional complications this will present to head teachers and their senior management teams in leading their school through a challenging time.
Please also note that a free emergency planning exercise relating to how schools might cope with the wide range of different flu scenarios that could face them at the start of the Autumn term. Schools are being invited to send up to two people to this event, which will give you a better feel for the desk top contingency planning you might want to carry out within senior management teams in anticipation of a much wider outbreak of flu come the autumn than has been the case in Southampton so far. The exercise will take place on 10th July, 2pm-5pm at the Novotel.
As the event could be quite large, we would be very grateful for early confirmation of the numbers attending from each school. A programme for the afternoon is due to be sent out shortly. It would be helpful for attendees to include the named flu contacts we have asked schools to nominate, as these will be the people within your school who will receive updates on any significant local developments in the pandemic over the summer. We will be contacting those schools who have not yet nominated these contact details shortly.
The number of reported cases of swine flu in the UK now stands at 3,254 (correct as of last night), although the situation in Southampton and Hampshire remains stable. Details of the current situation change daily and can be found at http://www.hpa.org.uk/ . For further advice from the Local Authority on suspected or confirmed cases of flu in your school, or any other aspect of pandemic flu preparation please contact Children’s Services and Learning on 023 8083 3072, or email pandemic.flu@southampton.gov.uk.
