Learning Stories in Southampton
‘Learning Stories’ is Southampton’s response to the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage which became statutory for all early years settings in September 2008.
It embodies and embeds the principles and practice of good observational assessment and record keeping which is vital to the health, wellbeing and development of all our children.
The child, supported by their family, is at the heart of the stories and their stories inform provision made by the early years setting they are attending and the support given to the setting by the Local Authority.
During September all Early Years settings in Southampton were asked to close for the day and training on ‘Learning Stories’ was delivered to all staff by the Early Years Support Team and Tutors. A total of 830 staff attended and the vast majority of evaluations were very positive. Training focussed on ‘My Unique Child’, the Parent’s Story and ‘My Special Book’, ‘My Observation Notes’ and ‘Update of Progress’, the Child’s Story. On-going training will vary according to the setting’s needs and further training on planning will follow for Leaders and Managers of settings to help complete the Setting’s Story.
The Learning Story materials are being provided by Southampton EYDCP for each child attending an early years setting in Southampton.
Copies of 'My Unique Child' can be obtained by contacting Start Point Sholing on 023 8036 3309.
