Working in a pre-school

Traditionally pre-schools work with children in the 2-5 year age range during term time only (approx 33-40 weeks per year).  Sessions are usually held in the morning or afternoon for approx 3 hours. Over the past few years this has slowly changed and now many pre-schools are open between 8.30am and 4pm in term time and a growing number are now operating for periods during school holidays.  Many pre-schools are either privately run or managed by a voluntary committee consisting of parents of children attending the pre-school. For more details about voluntary managed pre-schools visit www.pre-school.org.uk.

What would I be doing?
As a pre-school practitioner you will be working as part of team to prepare and deliver high quality play experiences based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (www.nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk).  You will also ensure that children are given an appropriate level of support and stimulation in a safe and caring environment.  Many practitioners are key workers for a small group of children and this involves building a relationship with parents/carers and other professionals (Educational Psychologists, Speech, Physio and Occupational therapists and Social workers).

What qualification do I need?
Many people begin by volunteering in their child’s pre-school and then move on to paid employment as a pre-school assistant practitioner and eventually a pre-school lead practitioner.  For any role in the early years and childcare sector you should hold as a minimum a level 2 Certificate in Literacy and Numeracy and be prepared to achieve a C grade in GCSE English and Mathematics before studying at level 3 and above. From September 2010 the entry level qualification will be Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.  This qualification will be available as a part time evening course option at many local colleges.

What do I do next?
The Children and Young People's Information Service (CYPIS) hold details of vacancies working in childcare in the early years pre-school sector in Southampton.  If you have a specific enquiry staff at CYPIS (0800 169 8833) will take your details and ask one of our advisors to contact you within 5 working days.
