UK Youth MP Elections for Southampton 2010

The results of 2010's youth MP elections were announced on Monday 8th March 2010 in the Council Chamber, Civic Centre.  Southampton had four candidates standing for election, aged from 11 to 17. They were: Miriam Hall, Nathan King, Grace McPherson and Danielle Townsend. Their campaign issues included fighting for cheaper public transport for young people, improving the range of music activities and opportunities available, promoting positive images of young people in the media, recycling and climate change, and lowering the voting age to 16.

Councillor Ben Walker announced the results to parents, Southampton City Youth Parliament members, Youth Support workers, a film crew from Solent University, a Daily Echo reporter and a head of division in Southampton City Council's Children's Services and Learning directorate.

1st) Nathan King
2nd) Grace McPherson
3rd) Danielle Townsend
4th) Miriam Hall

Nathan decided to take all 3 runners-up as his deputies. As well as attending regional and national meetings and campaign events, the youth MPs represent young people in the local area and take forward issues that matter to them. They also work alongside the Prevention and Inclusion area teams in the West (Nathan), East (Grace and Danielle) and Central (Miriam).
